The Wild West of film history
... and that time Kevin Costner tried really hard to stop Tombstone being made
“I’m your huckleberry.”
Howdy,
Any podcast could take a leaf out of the Wyatt Earp marketing manual. The legendary lawmaker lived a life of telling his story as frequently as possible. Humble was not a word in his vocabulary. He was also very much the hero of his own story, despite maybe not being the best human in the West.
The hero of Tombstone, though, is very much Kurt Russell. The villain; a little bit of Kevin Costner. Costner was originally slated to star in Tombstone, but like the real Earp, Costner didn’t think Tombstone was about Earp quite enough, so he made his own Wyatt Earp movie, called Wyatt Earp, which was more of a biopic than an ensemble… it also came out six months after Tombstone.
But to be honest, Costner did try to actively sabotage Tombstone several times, so karma’s a b-word…

All movies are nigh on impossible to make, if you really think about it. That’s why this podcast exists in the first place, because how amazing is it that any movie exists?! This movie had so many problems, it’s miraculous it’s even coherent!
The late Kevin Jarre’s original vision for Tombstone would have been wildly different had it ever been made and released as he wanted, but now we know Kurt Russell has the unreleased footage, whether he’ll ever compile a Director’s Cut is for him to decide.
Would you want to see it? Let me know!
And finally…
We’re experiencing a heatwave here in the UK at the moment. It’s hot. Nothing like the Arizona desert heat these actors had to deal with, but it’s still pretty hot. So wear sunscreen, find shade, and stay hydrated all the same!

Thanks for the five star review, Todd! Join him, and give me a rating or review (ideally five stars!) wherever you listen to this podcast. Thanks. You’re basically giving me a virtual hug, and telling me all the late nights are worth it.
Shout out to my network pals PastMaster, who also released a western-themed episode this week!

I'm thrilled to listen to this podcast. As someone who grew up in the American Southwest (well, for the most part LOL), I have grown accustomed to the history, culture, literature, films of the American West. However, I must say that I LOVE to listen/read the perspective on a non-native. It reminds me of the beauty of the west, which is what we need as it's currently 40.5 C. I am curious if you have read any works by Cormac McCarthy or watched the films? I feel he perfectly encompasses much of the West. Great work on this podcast!!!!
